One of the largest cities in Chile, Iquique (which means “where the birds and the wolves sleep”) is the capital of Region I in the northernmost region. Today it is one of Chile’s largest ports and is also home to the largest duty free shopping zone in South America, the ZOFRI (Zona Franca de Iquique). Temperate climate, beautiful beaches and world-class shopping malls make Iquique one of the most visited and popular cities in the country. It is said to be founded on the 16th century but have already been inhabited by the Chango tribe as early as 7000 BC. The abundance of mineral resources in the area, particularly sodium nitrate has led to Iquique’s development as a commercial and trading hub.
Visitors to Iquique can enjoy a host of attractions as well as entertaining and informative activities. There are hot springs and thermal baths known for their therapeutic properties. Climbers, trekkers, photographers and nature lovers can go for explorations into the desert or hiking along the majestic Andes mountains and the surrounding national parks. Para-gliders and hang gliders from all over the world are also familiar with the sand dune stretch in Mount Dragon. Sun worshippers and beachcombers can head out to Playa Cavancha, the largest beach known for its palm trees. Within the city are plenty of historic sites, mostly related to the war against Peru and Bolivia. And in downtown Iquique one can explore the grandeur of the city’s 19th century architecture with impressive buildings such as The Spanish Casino, the Croatian Casino, The Chinese Club and the Astoreca Palace at Arturo Prat University.
