The Laguna San Rafael National park became established to protect the plants and wildlife in 1945 and was titled a world Biosphere Reserve in 1979. The park is named after the San Rafael Lagoon which is a coastal lake that falls within the park.

The best way to explore this fascinating park is by way of tour. There are many boat tours available to get you close to the glaciers. As you are boating along the lake you can actually hear the cracks of ice blacks that break away from the glacier and fall into the surrounding icy waters. You can also enjoy the park by kayaking, hiking, mountain climbing and snow trekking. The mountains of the Laguna San Rafael National Park are also a huge draw for tourists. The park houses several Patagonia peaks including the highest mountain of the Southern Andes called Monte San Valentin. When visiting the park there are no supplies available except for fresh water so you will need to bring everything you need from Puerto Chacabuco or Coyhaique. The ferries usually feed passengers and the catamarans generally have chile and an open bar.

You can arrive at the park by air or sea. Small airplanes that carry up to five passengers can fly you to the park but this is a costly choice.
